Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine has its roots far in the past. Hippocrates (~400 BCE), who is often referred to as the “father” of conventional medicine, is also considered the father of naturopathic medicine. Hippocrates prescribed individualised dietary and lifestyle regimens for patients, in conjunction with herbal medicines – not unlike what naturopaths do today!

Naturopathic medicine combines the best of modern, scientific, evidence-based methods and diagnostic techniques with traditional, natural, treatment strategies. For people who want a practitioner who is scientifically-oriented, yet highly-trained and skilled in the use of natural medicines, naturopaths provide an ideal option.

Naturopaths are highly-trained primary healthcare practitioners. In addition to the basic medical sciences, chemistry, and conventional diagnostic techniques, naturopathic education includes extensive training in nutritional medicine, therapeutic exercise, lifestyle medicine, the use of dietary supplements, and herbal medicines.

As naturopaths, we practice under a unique model of healthcare. We spend the time required to hear our patients’ story and always strive to find and address the causes of their health issues. We invite questions and discussion and believe that the best medicine is done as a collaborative team between patient and practitioner. Ultimately, it is the patients who heal themselves – the naturopaths’ role is to guide and support patients in this process.
